I [heart] my gypsy valentine.

Won’t you be our gypsy valentine? Saturday, Feb. 11, Copal cruises to Lower East Side’s Mehanata Bulgarian Bar to offer a gritty grungy high-intensity gypsy crossover dance party–par for the course from those orchestral debutantes in pinstripes and combat boots.. Also, featuring the darling dangerous dancer RIO!

[note: this party is also a sendoff for our fiercely badass bass player Lorenzo Wolff who is heading to Boston to be part of a major 2.5-month musical operation with the Lisps.]

Copal + Ashia and the Bison Rouge on TOUR!

We just finished a killer studio session at Seaside Lounge recording some new tracks. We turned up the heat, the viscosity, the loquacious strings to 11, the gritty, the down and dirty rhythms, and pulled a few new instruments out of the closet. New tracks out later this fall.

Stay tuned for that.

Also, we’re on tour next month with Ashia & the Bison Rouge (Ashia is the darling of Vagabond Opera and also a former Cirque du Soleil performer) bringing her mix of Eastern European Chamber Pop all the way from Portland, OR.  There will be a few more shows tucked in there, but for reasons we can’t reveal, remain unannounced. Stay updated by keeping tabs on our tour calendar.

Copal is writing new music…

Yes, that’s right. We’re taking advantage of the hot summer months to explore new sonic territory, expand our creative horizons, and delve in deep on the writing front. And spend some time out of NYC… we’re all traveling a bunch too. Isabel is escaping the heat to dive into midwest and west coast waters, Hannah’s spending some time in breathtaking Iceland for a fresh air break, Lorenzo is headed down south for some western flair, Rob is teaching at a rock camp, Tripp might be traipsing about with multi-percussion in various city fronts–to be very cryptic and unspecific… In between all that, we’re buckling down the hatch and writing like mad (recording too!) Hence, we’re taking a slower pace on the performance front. We’re looking forward to sharing our new creations with you in the near future! (Shall we say Sat. August 20th with Fishtank Ensemble at Drom?!)

Darkwave Friday Night with Copal + Black Tape for a Blue Girl

For the best Friday night on the town ever, get your American darkwave, ethereal ambient and neo-classical experience with Black Tape for a Blue Girl, progenitors of the ethereal “darkwave” sound in the 90′s, and staking out new territory with their 10th studio album “10 Neurotics” featuring Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls, with more of a rock/dark cabaret sound. Expect sassy breaks and class with Copal, an orchestral world-steampunk band described as “artistically beautiful yet darkly tantalizing” (Maximum Ink). Jaggery, a Boston-based art-rock collective weaves harp, viola, piano, contrabass, and drum kit into a universe of its own, lead by Mali Sastri with one of the most beautiful voices in modern music. Closing the night is Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys, Boston’s 2010 Live Artist of the Year nominee, and Deli Magazine’s pick as Best Indie band of 2010, this band is “wildly unusual and diverse in material and presentation” (Boston Survival Guide).
