What a beautiful thrilling evening we had at L’Etage on Sunday nite in le’ ol’ Philly. This Way to the Egress were particularly entertaining with their gad-about gyspy songs and tales and theatrics. Awesome to see Taylor equally rocking it out on cello, accordion, guitar and voice. Impressive. Rio was entrancing with them, especially on a puppeteer/marionette act with Sarah–that was very entertaining and I totally didn’t see that coming.
Sidetracked were hilarious. I got to hear them rehearse and warm up their lines in the green room, and couldn’t stop laughing, while I applied spirit gum to my face to apply my lace mask. Needless to say, Kimberlie (of Sidetracked) goes to all gigs equipped with spirit gum–and it usually is generously used by burlesque dancers who arrive with pasties but no glue with which to affix them. Sidenote… and unimportant in this case. But regardless, that mysterious mask that Hannah was wearing, was indeed affixed with pastie glue. Anyway… moving on…
We LOVE Rio. Let’s just interject that here. She is a dynamic and lovely performer, and has boundless amounts of energy–and her goal for every evening is to get the crowd dancing. Well, we certainly had that at the end. We managed to get everyone to push back the chairs and embark on a dance fest as only fans can do to Amulet–the drummer from This Way to the Egress did some very fancy moves, lots of great dancers who were getting down with our most upbeat song of the set. Fun! Philly, we love you, and we’ll definitely be back… after we catch up on our beauty sleeeeeep…. <3
And so the process begins again. Or rather it is a continuous process, the writing and curating and developing of new music. My phone is actually a great tool for capturing melodies that come to me out of the blue. Sometimes accompanied by gusts of wind and other extraneous noise, which I guess only adds to the ambiance and place-setting to trip my memory back to that time/place of the melody emergence. Excited to write some really energetic dance-compelling music. I tend towards the more melancholy and down-tempo, but I can set that aside, I think. Yes, yes, I can. We can. Looking forward to sharing new music with you…
Yes, that’s right. On the up. We emerged from 2010 with a new album in hand “Into the Shadow Garden“, and performed our hearts out in NYC, Boston, Northampton, and Providence. We received a bit of NPR radio love in a few choice cities: NYC, Minneapolis, Boston. Also, just got word that Ceútara from the album is being featured on Continental Airlines world music radio station in-flight… Tempting, I do want to fly continental just to experience that. We’re visiting more cities this year. Our goal for 2011 is to hit the road as much as possible. Not literally. Silly. Anyway, looking forward to bringing you more exciting music, stories, musings, secret whisperings and passwords, and oh so many more lovely things.
