2 of the best gigs

Just before the hurricane, Copal performed 2 of the most amazing, wonderful, inspiring gigs in awhile! Both were in trio format. Both gigs were with some of my favorite musicians. And we made magick!

Gig 1: Alex Grey’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM): Deities and Demons Masquerade Ball on Sat. Oct. 27

Hannah Thiem (violin, vocals, electronics)
Rob Chamberlain (drums, electronic drum pad, vocals)
Lorenzo Wolff (bass guitar, antics)

Beautiful party. We performed in the library at CoSM’s haunted mansion. The first song we played was a riff on a song from my solo project, called “Invitation”. That song morphed into a 20min song that had moments sounding like Radiohead (omg Rob Chamberlain has a beautiful voice! I mean, I knew that, but in this context, wow, so perfect!!!). The first time we really explored vocals live for Copal. Lorenzo was experimenting with a fuzz wah pedal on his bass which gave so much more texture and depth to his bass. Awesome. It was a very inspired set, with lots of improvisation, new songs that we’ve been working on (Roses have Thorns, Doll’s Last Waltz), and very organic sounds. People seemed to really be enjoying–so much happening at once at the party, but many stayed for our entire 1 hr set and really got their dance on. One gentleman came up to us afterwards, and said he had just come from a Dead Can Dance show in Toronto, and he enjoyed our music WAY more. Amazing!

Gig 2: Xavier and Kim De la Vega (Siracusa)’s elaborate wedding at the Grand Marquis Hotel in Old Bridge, NJ on Sun. Oct. 28

Hannah Thiem (violin)
Liron Peled (doumbek, dumset, throat singing)
Raymond Sicam III (cello, throat singing, vocals)

I met Xavier and Kim last May at Rakkasah Spring Caravan. Kim has danced to Copal and Xavier has photographed us. They’ve become die-hard fans! It was of course an easy YES to their request for Copal to perform at their wedding the following year in October. What a gorgeous celebration!

Rakkasah Spring Caravan

Awesome weekend at Rakkasah Spring Caravan! We had such a lovely time performing with such beautiful amazing dancers. Sera Solstice, Rio, Lauren Robbiani, Aria, Surraya, Yame, Charo.. And we enjoyed bringing up special guest musicians Liron Peled (Raquy and the Cavemen) and Pete List (Beatbox Guitar). Thanks to Michelle for having us there again this year!

Copal + Ashia and the Bison Rouge on TOUR!

We just finished a killer studio session at Seaside Lounge recording some new tracks. We turned up the heat, the viscosity, the loquacious strings to 11, the gritty, the down and dirty rhythms, and pulled a few new instruments out of the closet. New tracks out later this fall.

Stay tuned for that.

Also, we’re on tour next month with Ashia & the Bison Rouge (Ashia is the darling of Vagabond Opera and also a former Cirque du Soleil performer) bringing her mix of Eastern European Chamber Pop all the way from Portland, OR.  There will be a few more shows tucked in there, but for reasons we can’t reveal, remain unannounced. Stay updated by keeping tabs on our tour calendar.

Delhi 2 Dublin + Copal rocked the Middle East Up!

Wednesday’s show at the Middle East Up was off the chain. Seriously. Such amazing energy and vibrance. Packed house. Awesome energy. We could have gone on for hours at that rate. DELHI 2 DUBLIN, Copal, Vadalna, Brian Carpenter & the Confessions. A night to remember. Thank you to everyone who came out to support and partake! We LOVE Delhi 2 Dublin!!! Let’s bring them back to Boston soon..

Delhi 2 Dublin + Copal are coming to Boston!

Delhi 2 Dublin, international touring act, returns to Boston on WEDNESDAY, May 4, 2011 at Middle East Upstairs, Cambridge, MA. As Hour Magazine so aptly stated, “Delhi 2 Dublin is the United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”. They’ve created their own niche at the intersection of gritty hip hop and electronic beats, traditional Indian influences and that raw Celtic sound that packs a punch – all of which make you want to get up and dance. (Evolving Music)

Also on the bill: Copal, NYC-based evocative orchestral experience brings a touch of vintage class to strings that rock, featuring tribal dancing fierceness from Vadalna Tribal Dance Co; and Brian Carpenter (founder of Beat Circus and Ghost Train Orchestra), Boston’s own carries the alternative vibe with his new project The Confessions in the show! Expect to see violins in every act.
